CHICAGO – BP announced this week that it would settle a class-action lawsuit from the sale of bad gasoline, CBS/WBBM-AM/FM reports. Around 4.7 million gallons of tainted gasoline were pumped at close to 600 Midwestern gasoline stations last August and September.

Thousands of drivers—who proved with a receipt that they purchased the bad gas—have received reimbursement checks from BP. The gasoline stations were in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. Others were awaiting settlement from the class-action suit, which BP settled for $7 million.

Members of the class-action lawsuit will receive $50 checks from BP. The oil company will also reimburse up to $1,500 for engine repairs that resulted from the bad fuel. The tainted gasoline contained high levels of polymer reside that made burning it in car engines difficult.

Close to 8,000 car owners claimed damage to their vehicles, which tended to stall or have difficulty starting. Many of those cars became not driveable and needed major repairs.
