McDonald’s Tests Automated Cashiers

Touchscreens allow customers to pay without waiting in line or interacting with cashiers.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Multiple sources on Reddit say McDonald’s is currently testing an automated cashier concept in the United States, which comprises touchscreen kiosks that allow customers to pay for their order without waiting in line or interacting with a human.

“This McDonald’s is actually pretty unique. First of all it’s owned by McDonald’s, it’s not a franchise. Second, this is the store where McDonald’s tests all the new technology. New griddle? It gets tested here first. New ordering monitors, new deep fryer, all tested here first. If it doesn’t work here, they don’t offer it to their franchisees,” notes one Reddit user of the Romeoville, Illinois, restaurant where the kiosk has been spotted — which is located next door to the QSR’s innovation center.

Some Reddit users also point out that the technology is “nothing new,” noting that convenience store chains such as Sheetz, for example, have been using touchscreen ordering technology for years.
