Walmart Relaunches Scan-and-Pay Option

The technology lets shoppers use an app to check out and pay for their items.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart is hoping that the second time’s the charm with its Scan & Go technology, Business Insider reports. The discount retailer is relaunching the technology that allows shoppers to scan and pay for items without going through a checkout line or interacting with cashiers.

Shoppers must download the Scan & Go app from Walmart, then use it to scan barcodes of items they want to buy. When they’re ready to checkout, users click a button to purchase the items, then show a digital receipt to the store greeter as they leave.

Walmart has rolled out Scan & Go to stores in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Dakota and Texas. Shoppers who don’t have smartphones can pick up a hand-held scanner. There’s also an option for customers who don’t wish to link a credit card to the app account—they merely hit “finish” on the app, then head to a self-checkout register to complete the payment.

Some analysts see Walmart’s Scan & Go as a direct response to Amazon Go, which is still being tweaked by Amazon.com.
