The owners of Korner News said the recent dollar increase in the state’s cigarette tax led to the closing.

SHARON, Penn. – Pennsylvania’s cigarette tax rose by a dollar on Aug. 1, and that was the last straw for Toby and Jaque Abrutz, owners of Korner News convenience store, WYTV and the Associated Press report. The couple has closed the store because of the impact the higher tax will have on its business. The state cigarette tax is now $2.60 per pack, the largest bump since 1935.

“It really hurts because you’re trying to make a buck and they keep on penalizing you,” said Toby Abrutz. “Every time you try to get ahead, the state puts another tax on something.”

At Korner News, cigarettes provided a large chunk of their business. “There’s just not enough business. I mean, everyone is going to start going to Ohio now to buy their cigarettes,” said their daughter, Lisa Abrutz. “It’s been tough for a long time and it just really pushed us over the edge.”

While the Abrutzes will continue to operate a second location, the higher tax has the family worried about how to pay their bills. “My dad’s worked hard all his life to make a buck and it’s really tough,” Lisa Abrutz said.
