San Francisco Flavored Tobacco Ban Heads for the Ballot

A measure to repeal the ban has enough signatures to put the issue before voters.

SAN FRANCISCO – In June, San Francisco’s board of supervisors approved a ban on flavored and menthol tobacco products, but a coalition against the ban has gathered enough signatures to put the matter before voters next year, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Let’s Be Real coalition spokesman Jaime Rojas said the ban limited freedom of choice for residents. The group has the backing of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., the American Vaping Association and the Arab American Grocers Association.

The group will use its “resources — both financial and those on the ground — to begin educating the voters on what this ordinance is all about.” Let’s Be Real has until Aug. 7 to submit the 19,040 valid signatures of registered city voters to qualify to put the repeal issue on the ballot.

The ban on flavored and menthol tobacco products isn’t scheduled to go into effect until April 2018 to allow retailers a chance to sell current stock. Supervisor Malia Cohen, who sponsored the bill, labeled the repeal effort “ridiculous.”

The Minneapolis City Council will vote on banning the sale of menthol cigarettes, on Aug. 2, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Minneapolis already prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products.
