CHICAGO - A new Target store in downtown Chicago ?" CityTarget ?" opened yesterday with a bit of a European flare: a Pret A Manger restaurant, USA Today reports.

The U.K.-based Pret A Manger quick-service chain incorporates only natural, preservative-free ingredients in its food, including antibiotic-free meats, items made with cage-free eggs and vegan salads. Each Pret operates its own kitchen and the menu features fresh soups, salads, sandwiches and breads.

The pairing is the first for Target, but it "is bound to be watched by the major retail chains," writes USA Today.

Target executives maintain there are no plans for additional Pret restaurants in other Target stores, though Shawn Gensch, senior vice president of marketing for Target, said," Where it goes from here remains to be seen." As Target opens more urban locations, he says, it will at least consider healthier food options on a one-by-one basis.

"Who knows where this will lead?" said Martin Bates, president of Pret.
