More Convenience, More Food

In Florida, convenience store operators are moving toward fresh food options to elevate the industry’s image and attract hungry customers.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The front corner of the Daily’s Dash, a Jacksonville-based convenience store, is becoming more recognizable for its fresh foodservice, writes Jacksonville.com.

Up until a few weeks ago, the c-store chain sold only pre-made and pre-wrapped sandwiches. According to CEO Aubrey Edge, fresh foodservice is coming to all of Daily’s stores by the end of 2014.

“It’s a part of the changing face of convenience stores across the country. What was once a place to microwave a burrito and wash it down with a bucket of soda has become a place of fresher foods and more variety,” writes the news source.

“Over the last few years, they’ve all gone to more food,” said Jeff Lenard, NACS spokesman. “Customers are always in a hurry, and they’ve moved from sit-down to takeout. The food’s improved, the prices are lower, you grab it and don’t pay a tip.”

C-stores can also look to food trucks as a means to bring foodservice into their space. Lenard noted that in cities such as Washington, D.C., allowing a food truck to operate in the parking lot of convenience store is much more cost effective than installing a commercial kitchen. “And you’ve already got 1,000 customers walking in each day,” he said.
