ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The NACS State of the Industry 2013 Data Fact Book  is now available. The 27th edition of the Fact Book provides a detailed statistical account of industry data over the past several years — or in some cases, decades — as well as a historical recap of the industry and key definitions and events that have shaped it.

U.S. convenience stores reached record in-store sales in 2013, with sales climbing 2.4% to $204 billion. Combined with motor fuels sales of $491.5 billion, overall convenience store sales were $695.5 billion. Among the in-store categories, foodservice drove profits, accounting for 28.9% of gross profit dollars. Packaged beverages were second, accounting for 19.7% of gross profit dollars. While tobacco products constituted 36.4% of in-store revenue dollars, they accounted for only 18.5% of gross margin dollars.

The Fact Book tracks many key metrics over the past quarter century of its existence, as well as some metrics that go back as far as the 1950s. Delivered in a self-extracting executable file (.exe format), the Fact Book contains more than 560 spreadsheets of extracted data for easy manipulation and custom reporting.

Granular details about merchandise, foodservice, motor fuels, store operations, top quartile and same-store components of the convenience and fuel retailing industry are included in the Fact Book, as well as statistical breakouts on:

  • Industry sales and profits
  • Per-store sales, profits and expenses
  • Motor fuel operations
  • Category data
  • Store-level survey data
  • Top-performer information

The Fact Book is a companion piece to the NACS State of the Industry Report of 2013 Data, which was published in late June. Those who previously ordered this year’s NACS State of the Industry Report have received information on how to obtain their complementary Fact Book.

The NACS State of the Industry of 2013 Data Fact Book is available for purchase  as either a standalone product or as part of the NACS State of the Industry Report/Fact Book package.
