ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The NACS State of the Industry 2015 Data Fact Book is now available. This 29th edition of the Fact Book provides a detailed statistical account of industry data over the past several years—or in some cases, decades—as well as an historical recap of the industry and key definitions and events that have shaped it.

U.S. convenience stores reached record in-store sales in 2015, climbing 5.8% to $225.8 billion. Combined with motor fuels sales of $349.0 billion, overall convenience store sales were $574.8 billion. Among the in-store categories, foodservice drove profits, accounting for 34.0% of gross profit dollars. Packaged beverages were second, accounting for 18.8% of gross profit dollars. While tobacco products constituted 35.9% of in-store revenue dollars, they accounted for only 16.8% of gross margin dollars.

The Fact Book tracks key metrics over the past quarter century of its existence, as well as some metrics that go back as far as the 1950s. Delivered in a self-extracting executable file (digital/Excel® format), the Fact Book contains more than 650 spreadsheets of aggregated raw data for easy manipulation, printing and customized reporting.

Excel worksheets make it easy for retailers to benchmark their performance against the industry and top performers with minimal effort. Individual company results, coupled with the Fact Book data, identify the business areas that need a renewed focus and improvement. Finance, merchandising, operations and other key functional areas will all find essential data in the Fact Book to help make better business decisions. In addition, banks, appraisers, product suppliers and many others will find the Fact Book vital to their analysis.

Granular details about merchandise, foodservice, motor fuels, store operations, top quartile and same-store components of the convenience and fuel retailing industry are included in the Fact Book, as well as statistical breakouts on:

  • Industry sales and profits
  • Per-store sales, profits and expenses
  • Motor fuel operations
  • Category data
  • Store-level survey data
  • Top-performer information

The Fact Book is a companion piece to the NACS State of the Industry Report of 2015 Data, which was published in late June. Those who previously ordered this year’s NACS State of the Industry Report have received information on how to obtain their complementary Fact Book.

The 2015 Data Fact Book is available for purchase as either a standalone product or as part of the NACS State of the Industry Report/Fact Book package. Orders can be placed online at nacsonline.com/soi or by contacting Reed Armstrong, NACS products and services manager.
