For just over a dollar an hour, small businesses can reap the benefits of insane amounts of foot traffic.

NEW YORK CITY – Who knew a game app could translate into real sales at local businesses? That’s the reality of Pokemon Go, a widely successful game app that has users pounding the pavement of their hometowns in search of Pokemon lurking in restaurants, convenience stores, retailers and other businesses, Inc.com reports.

Because Pokemon Go encourages players to explore the real world along with their avatars, merchants can capitalize on this unprecedented bump in foot traffic by learning how to play the game in converting gamers into shoppers. Here are some suggestions:

Figure out what your business is: Gym or PokeStop. Players’ avatars gather rewards at PokeStops and fight other players at Gyms. To find out if your store is a Gym or PokeStop, visit the map here once the Ingress app has been installed on your phone. Then you can search a world map of various “portals,” such as PokeStop or Gym.

Decide what Lure to use. Pokemon Go provides players with a bunch of in-app purchases, but Lures is the best one for small businesses. Lures bump up the rate of Pokemon generation around the PokeShop when placed for a half hour. That might not seem like a lot, but Pokemon are not plentiful. Luring offers retailers a powerful tool for acquiring shoppers, and costs not much more than a dollar per hour to run.

For Pokemon Gyms, you can’t use Lures, but retailers can bounce off of their location near a Gym. Giveaway Pokemon Gym badges with your custom logo or business name. Keep track on a sandwich board or store window which team currently controls the nearby Gym and give a discount for the winning team members. Chat about the game on social media on the platforms you use regularly for your business with hashtags #pokemongo and #pokemon.

Remember, even if the popularity of Pokemon Go wans soon, you’ll have gained new customers. For more tips, read the entire Inc. article here.
