Target Tests New Curbside Pickup Service

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Star Tribune reports that Target has confirmed details of a new curbside pickup pilot program.

Customers who place an order via Target’s app or website would be able to drive up and park in dedicated parking spaces next to the store and employees will bring the items out to their cars, writes the news source.

The service is currently limited to Target employees, according to Target spokesman Eddie Baeb, but the retailer hopes to roll out the program soon. "We certainly see the potential in a broader rollout," he told the news source. "In the coming months, we hope to make it guest facing."

Target initially began testing curbside pickup in 2014 through a partnership with a California-based startup called Curbside. The service was tested in select Target stores in California and eventually rolled out to more than 100 stores in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Chicago. Although Target ended that program in 2016, Baeb said the pilot with Curbside was successful and Target learned a lot from that experience.

"But we saw and believe there's a good opportunity in building our own end-to-end experience that is wholly dedicated to Target," he told the news source. "In having Target run it, we're getting to control and operate the entire experience."

The new service is an extension of Target's in-store pickup service, which accounts for about 15% of the retailer’s online sales volume. "It's another example of how we see stores and digital coming together more and more," Baeb said.

Target is also testing its next-day delivery service, Target Restock, in the Twin Cities and other Minnesota locations.
