MIAMI – Publix has become the latest retailer to jump on the grocery delivery bandwagon, Chain Store Age reports. The store started delivery through its partnership with Instacart in select areas of Miami yesterday.

“We know this service is something our customers are interested in, and we’re excited to learn more as we move forward with this pilot,” said Kevin Murphy, Publix senior vice president of retail operations. “We chose Instacart because we believe the experience they provide aligns well with the needs of our company, associates and customers.”

Publix indicated that this is a pilot program, and that it will evaluate how it works before taking the program to a wider audience. “Publix and Instacart share a common mission—to get premier quality food into the hands of as many people as possible,” said Apoorva Mehta, founder and CEO of Instacart.

Publix will not sell age-restricted items, such as tobacco and alcohol, gift cards or prescription medications, via Instacart. Also, customers cannot redeem coupons, either print or digital, when placing online orders. A $10 minimum order is required.

Instacart has partnered with Costco, Kroger, Petco, Target and Walmart. The online delivery company shared what convenience means to consumers and is driving innovations in delivery during the NACS Leadership Forum in February.
