VALPARAISO, Ind. – Family Express has launched a Free Fruit for Kids program to expand access to healthy foods throughout the community.

The Northwest Indiana Times writes that kids under the age of 12 can get a free banana, pear or apple at a Family Express store for the next two months.

“We’re looking to get them addicted,” Family Express CEO Gus Olympidis joked, adding, “A permanent concern is that we want healthy alternatives, especially for kids.”

The initiative is part of the company’s better-for-you program to bring foods such as yogurt, fruit cups and veggies to all Family Express stores. The news source notes that every Family Express store will eventually have a dedicated section for shoppers to easily locate the healthier options.
