CHESHIRE, Ct. – Protein-packed snacks and meals are more popular than ever and the Wayback Burgers chain is taking a unique approach to their protein-packed menu. Beginning today, the Connecticut-based burger is featuring an Oreo mud pie cricket protein milkshake. That right, crickets.

Recently, crickets have been generating buzz as a high-protein alternative to animal sources, favored by some for their lower carbon footprint.  The shake, which is made with Peruvian chocolate-flavored cricket powder, originally began as an April's Fool's joke a few months ago. But the response was so positive when Wayback tested the item briefly at select locations that they decided to add it to the menu for a limited time.

According to the burger chain, they first tested 20 to 30 recipe variations with five different flavors of cricket powder. But, for customers who want protein without the bugs, the chain is also launching a jerky milkshake made with barbeque, maple syrup and hickory spice flavors  — served with a Slim Jim.
