NEW YORK - Mobile payments service Square has implemented a digital loyalty card, allowing merchants to reward customers by applying discounts or digital punches redeemable for free or discounted food or beverages each time they make a Square-processed purchase, The New York Times reports.

The digital punch card avoids a wallet stuffed with paper cards, said Keith Rabois, Square??s chief operating officer. "Those punch cards that you get and stick on your refrigerator and leave behind? On your phone you have one for every merchant you visit."

The feature is the latest effort by Square to persuade customers to ditch the traditional wallet for its mobile payment service. In its last software upgrade, it launched a revised app that enables customers to pay with Square by simply walking up to a merchant??s Square Register and announcing their name.
