PHILADELPHIA - Once again, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is advocating for a 2 cents per ounce tax on soft drinks, despite growing opposition to such a tax, Patch.com reports. In 2010, the tax did not pass the city council.

Philly Jobs, Not Taxes organized a rally yesterday against any tax on sugared beverages, including soda. The coalition is made up of small-business owners, labor unions, beverage industry workers and concerned residents.

Dan Grace, secretary/treasurer of Teamsters Local 830, said the tax threatens local jobs. "They [the soft-drink industry] don't have to be in Philadelphia," he said, adding that the companies could move outside the city.

The tax also worries businesses along the city??s border. "If people could quickly cross the border and get something for cheaper, why wouldn't they?" questioned Frank Keel, who represents Manayunk Development Corporation.

The City Council discussed the topic at length last week and the soda tax is on the agenda for this week??s sessions.
