TOKYO - Proving that Japanese innovation is light years ahead of everyone else, Kirin has developed a creative solution to staying cool this summer and all summers henceforth: soft serve beer.

As ABC News reports, the drink tops off Kirin??s Ichiban Shibori beer with frozen foam that resembles frozen yogurt. Kirin spokesperson Tadayuki Higashi described the drink as "putting a lid" on beer, with the frozen top preserving the beer??s chill factor for 30 minutes longer than un-topped beer.

"People expect beer foam to be soft and frothy, so the frozen top is a little surprising at first," Higashi said. "The drink is indescribable."

Kirin created the frozen beer in an effort to target adult consumers who have drifted toward trendy liquor-based cocktails. Higashi said the frozen beer creates a "new experience" with a classic drink.

The soft-serve top is made from beer and is available in more than 100 locations throughout Japan. Kirin intends to expand the frozen machines to 1,000 locations by the end of the year.

"We think this is a drink that will sell year round," Higashi said. "In the winter, it will be like eating shaved ice that tastes like beer."
