SACRAMENTO, CA - Last week, the California Senate passed a bill that would prohibit food vendors from dispensing cooked food in polystyrene or Styrofoam containers, FOX40 reports.

The bill seeks to keep Styrofoam products out of the waste stream and environment. It has moved to the state Assembly, much to the concern of many restaurateurs.

"It??s very vital to our business," said Carolyn Tibbetts, a manager at Carolina??s, a Sacramento restaurant. "It??s what we use, it??s what everything works around??It??s inexpensive and [a] good insulator for our food."

If the bill becomes law and restaurants must forego Styrofoam for the more expensive plastic or paper, customers could expect to see rising menu prices.

"If it??s going to cost us more to distribute it, we??re going have to find someone to help us out, so it would be to the customers," Tibbetts said.

SB 568 would make California the first to ban Styrofoam statewide.
