NEW YORK – Starbucks announced last weekend that it is
banning smoking within 25 feet of its store entrances, where local law permits.
It is also banning electronic cigarettes at all of its locations, Medical Daily
reports.
The coffee chain recently tested the concept in California,
enacting a 25-foot nonsmoking perimeter beyond the 15-foot ban required under
state law.
The plan affects about 7,000 stores and is intended to
expand the chain’s no-smoking policy to its patios, where they exist. How the
company plans to enforce the rule is unclear.
“If there were any concerns, we would hope to resolve it
amicably,” said Jaime Lynn Riley, a company spokesperson.
