PARIS – Following a request by French Health Minister
Marisol Touraine earlier this year to investigate the risks of e-cigarettes, a
panel of experts has returned a report urging their regulation, France 24
reports.
Released earlier this week, the report recommended that
e-cigarettes should not be banned, acknowledging that their usage appears to
reduce damage caused by cigarettes. However, it did argue for their ban in all
places where traditional cigarettes are prohibited.
“Even if the knowledge on these products is advancing
rapidly, there still are many points of uncertainty,” it stated. “We cannot
wait for established scientific data to start proposing recommendations” for
the use of e-cigarettes.
The report detailed 28 recommendations, including banning the
sale of e-cigarettes to minors and applying the same advertising rules for
tobacco products to e-cigarettes.
