DALLAS – Starbucks will open 15 stores in low- to medium-income areas across the country, expanding its social impact investments, which picks business districts undergoing rejuvenation to open stores, the Dallas Morning News reports. The Jamaica neighborhood in Queens, New York, saw the first such store last year. Other areas include the Englewood section of Chicago; East Baltimore; Phoenix; Long Beach, Calif.; and Ferguson, Mo.

Starbucks indicated that the stores must still be profitable to survive. The company’s commitment to open a location in the Red Bird Mall in Dallas “creates great momentum for the redevelopment,” said Terrence Maiden of Corinth Properties.

“While parts of southern Dallas continue to lack economic opportunity, there is a robust potential customer base, and a strong business and community led movement under way to revitalize those parts of the area that need it most,” said Traci York, regional vice president for Starbucks, in a statement. “This is both an opportunity to grow our business by reaching new customers and to be part of a local solution for social change.”

In addition to Dallas, Seattle and Birmingham, Ala., will also have social impact investment stores.
