OAK BROOK, Ill. – The Happy Meal is getting another nutritional makeover, USA Today reports. Starting July 4, McDonald’s will add Go-Gurt Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt as a Happy Meal side item.

“Parents and kids tell us they're looking for more choice — and more healthful choices in Happy Meals,” said Julie Wenger, senior director of U.S. marketing for the burger chain.

McDonald’s had tested yogurt in its children’s meals 10 years ago, but the item never caught on. “It was an idea ahead of its time,” said Werner, adding that Canadian locations already offer yogurt with Happy Meals.

The fast-food chain also debuted its new animated character, a smiling, Happy Meal box named “Happy.” By the end of the year, McDonald’s has plans to only list juice, milk or water for Happy Meals instead of soft drinks.

In Austin, Texas, McDonald’s also started testing Clementines and mandarin oranges as a Happy Meal side option. The citrus fruit marks the first time the chain has put whole fruit on its children’s menu.
