SILICON VALLEY – A new app-based startup, Filld, hopes to make fueling up easier with its gas delivery service. Currently available in Silicon Valley, users who download the Filld app can request a fill-up, which will be completed within several hours, for a flat fee of $7 in addition to the average per gallon local fuel price.

"Given all the on-demand services out there today, I just figured something like this must already exist," founder Scott Hempy told tech site The Verge in a recent interview. However, Hempy’s subsequent research didn’t turn up any similar businesses … or any regulatory stumbling blocks to starting one himself.

The process is similar to using Uber: iPhone users download the Filld app (expected to be available soon for Android), put in the vehicle information and location, along with a window of time for delivery. A truck is then dispatched to the location and the user just needs to leave the gas cap unlocked. While the company is starting small, using one truck that offers only 87 octane fuel for users in the of Silicon Valley neighborhoods of Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Redwood City, the company’s founder is planning for growth.

Filld is essentially cutting out the overhead of operating a physical location. And Hempy is confident that the business model has major growth potential, likening it to Amazon: “Who needs a physical store? What they did for books, we can do for gas," he told The Verge.
