Wacky Combos Work for Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s

The Most American Thickburger is packed with beef, a grilled hot dog, American cheese and a layer of kettle chips.

MCLEAN, Va. – Sister QSR chains Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s aren’t shy about packing a punch in their latest menu creation, even while competitors strive to bring more healthy options to calorie-counting customers.

USA Today reports that the fast food chain, which wasn’t afraid to offer The Burger Masher (a garlic mashed potatoes and truffle gravy burger);, will begin selling The Most American Thickburger this week.

This sandwich is one-third pound of Black Angus beef and a grilled hot dog split in two topped with American cheese and a layer of Lay's Kettle Cooked Potato Chips. "It's like two sandwiches in one — and your side,” Brad Haley, chief marketing officer for the two sister chains, told the news source.

USA Today continues, explaining that the wacky flavor combinations, or mash-ups, tap into the “emotional psyche of Millennials,” which is why the QSRs are marketing the sandwich to men age 18-34.

Haley added that the QSRs have been working to perfect The Most American Thickburger for nearly a decade, notably to solve the soggy chips conundrum. He said the chains fixed that problem by using crispy, kettle chips that don’t turn to mush under the produce.

The Most American Thickburger will be offered for a limited time beginning May 20.

In case you’re trying to recall other wacky menu items where the chains were seemingly yet “politely thumbing their noses at the food police,” here’s a few limited-edition fan-favorites: the Monster Thickburger (two burger patties, four strips of bacon and three slices of cheese); the Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich (no burger involved); and most recently, the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos burger, available at select Los Angeles locations.
