H.R. 1639 seeks to protect premium cigars from being legislated by the FDA.

WASHINGTON - The Cigar Rights of America announced earlier this week that it has launched a national petition drive, Operation Cigar Liberty, to gather signatures for H.R. 1639, a bill that seeks to protect premium cigars from being legislated by the Food and Drug Administration, Cigar Aficionado reports.

Introduced by Rep. Bill Posey, the bill seeks to eliminate the FDA??s jurisdiction over the premium cigar industry by amending the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

While the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act largely overlooked cigars, last year, the FDA declared its intent to regulate cigars. In advance of legislation that addresses that goal, the CRA, in partnership with the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers association, decided to act.
