LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Lottery plans to boost sales by installing lottery ticket vending machines at high-traffic retail stores, the Associated Press reports.

Ernie Passailaigue, executive director of the Arkansas Lottery, said that the machines would require consumers to swipe a driver??s license to make a purchase, a measure that prevents children from buying tickets. The lottery has contracted to buy 100 machines, and they will be rolled out this summer.

Passailaigue said the lottery must innovate in order to grow revenue, and as such, that it could attract a large pool of new players with a presence at major retailers. He said the new machines would save players from having to wait in line at traditional lottery customer service desks, a convenience that would also breed increased sales.

The agency??s move has drawn criticism from the anti-lottery Arkansas Family Council, though Passailaigue maintains that the machines won??t present a lure for children.

"We're very conservative in running this business," Passailaigue said. "We'll lose sales from people who don't want to swipe their license."
