NEW YORK – Fortune reports that McDonald’s is testing a healthier version of its Chicken McNuggets recipe by removing artificial preservatives from the popular menu item.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s told Fortune that the new recipe is being tested at 140 locations in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Testing began in early March, and so far the chain hasn’t revealed plans to rollout preservative-free McNuggets nationally.

The McNuggets are “still made with 100% white meat chicken, no artificial flavors or colors, and our signature seasonings and crispy breading,” the spokesperson told Fortune, who described the new recipe as being “simpler” and something “parents can feel good about.”

So far, the response to preservative-free McNuggets from customers in Portland has been positive.
