Not-So-Guilty Pleasures

Washington Post food writer agrees that sometimes a bit of indulgence is a good thing.

WASHINGTON – Writing that 7-Eleven’s Buffalo Chicken Go-Go Taquitos “own him,” Washington Post food writer Tim Carman shares that sometimes he just needs to indulge.

Well-versed on food industry authors (and critics) such as Michael Moss and Michael Pollan, Carman writes that his knowledge about processed foods doesn’t deter him from enjoying an occasional food fix.  “I’d like to claim my intellect always overrides my emotions and my palate in matters of taste, but we all know that’s a lie. Sometimes you just want a Krispy Kreme doughnut, even if you have to mow down a street full of Food Police to get one.”

Carman’s neighborhood 7-Eleven is home to one of his immediate impulse finds: “Few items in the convenience store’s display case of Hot Impulse Junk (I’m trademarking that as I type) entice me, but those Buffalo Chicken Go-Go Taquitos own me. Their exterior, I must admit, can be off-putting: Are those golden tubes shellacked with tanning spray? So I close my eyes and let the pleasures roll across my palate. The crispiness. The tanginess. The heat.”

He continues describing his favorite indulgence foods from the likes of Arby’s and Taco Bell. He also praises the chili-cheese half smoke from and a D.C. street vendor: “As I stood next to a trash can, taking one large, satisfying bite after another of my half-smoke, I realized something: I didn’t feel a lick of guilt.”

Readers chimed in with their own indulgence favorites, including regional snacks brand Utz, located in Hanover, Pennsylvania. “Utz potato chips, the red hot ones if they're there, but otherwise just the plain ones. They're little slices of heaven,” wrote one reader, as another chimed in that “Utz Chesapeake Bay Crab chips are the best, but they are strongly addictive. Do not open a family size bag if you are alone.”

And finally, said one reader: “Amen! Great piece. Let the food shamers hate.” Followed by: “Best food article I've read this year.”
