The fast-food chain is hoping the new taco concept will appeal to a new customer base.

IRVINE, Calif. – Taco Bell’s new fast-casual concept has little in common with the fast-food Tex-Mex chain except for tacos, Nation’s Restaurant News reports. U.S. Taco Co. and Urban Taproom will open its first location in Huntington Beach, Calif., with a scaled down menu of fries, shakes and 10 premium tacos. Future plans include adding craft beer and wine to locations.

The new menu features American flavors more reminiscent of food trucks and Texas taquerias than burritos or fried shells. “Taco Bell is Mexican-inspired. U.S. Taco is American-inspired,” explained Greg Creed, CEO of Taco Bell.

U.S. Taco Co. comes after extensive research revealed that a large swath of people eschewed any QSR. Instead of working on getting those people into a Taco Bell, Creed decided to design a fast-casual place. The team, headed by Jeff Jenkins, senior brand manager, “took the best of American cuisine and put it into a taco,” he said. For example, U.S. Taco Co. offers a Southern-style fried chicken breast with gravy, fresh cilantro and corn pico de gallo wrapped in a flour tortilla.

Future locations will have shakes flavored with beer and four to six craft beers on tap, along with 50 or so kinds in cans and bottles. However, Creed emphasized that U.S. Taco Co. “is not a bar.”
