BATON ROUGE, LA - Kids under the age of 16 won??t be restricted from purchasing energy drinks, reports the Associated Press.

State Sen. Robert Adley proposed the bill at the request of a constituent, a Louisiana mother who is blaming energy drinks for her 15-year-old son??s illness, calling the beverages "speed in a can."

Adley told the state Senate Commerce Committee that energy drinks are "way different than buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks." However, some of his colleagues did not agree, noting that the bill "improperly singled out one set of drinks when others are just as caffeinated," writes the news source.

"It gets to the point of where do we stop? We try to regulate and legislate everything," said Sen. Mike Michot.

State Sen. Norby Chabert commented that the bill could negatively impact sales of other caffeinate beverages, which he said could damage business at convenience stores around the state, the news source reports.
