WAWA, PA – As Wawa celebrates its 50th anniversary, ABC News is highlighting Wawa’s passionate customer base.

“Not too many convenience stores are popular enough to have their own fan clubs, but Wawa is,” ABC news begins, noting that while some dismiss the chain as “a glorified service station,” its customers argue that it’s a one-stop shop for great food and coffee, as well as clean bathrooms.

"I see things at Wawa I don’t see at other places,” said 27-year-old Chris, a self-described Wawa defender. “Everyone will hold the door for you. You’ll have random conversations with people. We’ll be waiting for our sandwiches, and we start talking about baseball or football. It’s almost like I’ve known them my entire life! In a lot of ways, it’s a meeting place.”

Wawa’s Facebook page boasts more than 1 million likes, with followers beyond the states where the company operates.

Chris and others shared with ABC the reasons why they’re gaga over Wawa:

  • Sparkling clean: Yelp reviewers rave about the company’s “squeaky clean bathrooms”
  • Made-to-order sandwiches: Touch-screen ordering stations allow guests to customize their meals, including adding healthy toppings like spinach, guacamole and roasted red peppers
  • Great coffee: “Craving a vanilla chai tea latte? Skip Starbucks and head to Wawa,” ABC concludes. “This isn’t your average gas station coffee. Most Wawas have an impressive row of coffee dispensers in several flavors. There are frozen coffees and sugar-free options, too.”
