The U.K. convenience store chain has plans to add more fresh vegetables and wine to spur sales.

LONDON – McColl’s, a U.K. convenience store chain, has expansive plans to grow its units, the Daily Express reports. McColl’s will use its fresh vegetable and wine program to increase sales.

Currently, the chain has 725 convenience stores, with a goal of adding 75 more by the end of 2014 and another 200 more by early 2016 for a total of 1,000 locations. “We operate among the chimney pots and the streets where people live. They can pop into our stores for food rather than get in the car, pay for petrol and drive 10 miles elsewhere,” said James Lancaster, chairman and CEO. “Our recent float has put us in a position to make acquisitions of independent convenience stores and grow further.”

The chain has been experiencing growth lately. Total sales at McColl’s rose 3% in the 19 weeks from November 25 to April 6, with same-store sales jumping 1.4%. Lancaster said that widening the variety of groceries, such as fresh and chilled foods, has helped drive sales up.

The convenience store market is heating up in the United Kingdom, with The Co-operative saying it would double the number of its convenience stores and U.K. supermarket chains eyeing expansion into convenience stores, too.
