Alcohol Sales on the Rise

In related news, American consumption of alcohol is improving, too.

NORWALK, Conn. - Alcoholic beverages posted positive sales for 2010, non-craft domestic beers notwithstanding, Marketing Daily reports. In addition, a new Harris Interactive poll finds that American consumption of alcohol is changing.

The Harris poll discovered that 29 percent of respondents (three in 10) age 21 and older said they have consumed alcohol at least once a week, including 5 percent who drank daily and 10 percent who drink alcohol several times a week.

The Beverage Information Group??s (BIG) "Handbook Advance 2011" report revealed that wine and distilled spirits both had upswings in 2010. Distilled spirits had a sales bump of 2.1 percent, with on-premises consumption rising slightly. Wine registered a 1.7 percent growth, with domestic table wines having a strong showing.

Part of the growth of wine sales is from the variety of products and the number of different varietals, said Eric Schmidt, BIG manager of information services. "The Millennial generation continues to be a target for wine marketers as they position their brands as affordable and fun," he said.

Total beer consumption dropped 1.9 percent but imports did have some growth. Domestic beer consumption plummeted 2.8 percent with only the super-premium, craft and malt-flavored beverages category seeing growth because of craft beer??s popularity.
