FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Cumberland Farms has teamed up with PayPal for a test pilot of a new mobile app that offers a 5-cent per-gallon discount

According to the retailer??s website: "At Cumberland Farms, it is our mission to provide our customers with tremendous value and unparalleled service. We are always looking for ways to innovate and use new technologies to make customers' lives easier. The new Cumberland Farms SmartPay program lets you pay at the pump with PayPal, saving you time and money! To save 5 cents per gallon with our SmartPay program, you will need a GPS enabled mobile device and a PayPal account. The SmartPay program is the only mobile app that lets you pay for gas with your phone and only available at Cumberland Farms."

Cumberland Farms CIO Dave Banks told the Boston Globe that the company hopes to roll out the app to all 600 locations. "For us, this is a way to attract new customers who are mobile-savvy," he said, adding that he believes the app can help increase customer loyalty, as well as save on credit card transaction fees because the PayPal network is less expensive to use.

Banks also commented to the newspaper that there is a possibility that customers could use the app to purchase a quantity of gas at a fixed price, and then "draw down gallons as they need it."

And yes, Cumberland Farms did take into account the urban legends that cell phone use at the pump could spark a fire and cause irrefutable damage ?" which is different than static electricity. Banks noted that there are no known incidences of mobile phones sparking fires or explosions at the pump.
