SAN FRANCISCO – Google, in an effort to compete with e-commerce giant Amazon.com, is testing a new online shopping service with same-day delivery.

The pilot project, Google Shopping Experience, is being tested in San Francisco with partners including Target and Walgreens. It also allows local residents to order items from participating retailers such as Toys “R” Us, Staples and American Eagle Outfitters. Participants can also shop at local Bay Area shops such as San Francisco’s Blue Bottle Coffee, and the Bay Area’s Palo Alto Toy & Sport and Raley’s Nob Hill Foods.

Google is expanding its e-commerce presence to seek growth and become less dependent on Web search, which accounts for most of its revenue, reports Bloomberg.

The company issued a call to San Francisco residents to sign up for the pilot program on its website: “If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area (in the city of San Francisco, and the Peninsula from San Mateo to San Jose) and would like to help test this new initiative, please sign up here. We’re still working out our long-term pricing plan but early testers will get six months of free, unlimited same-day delivery. The pilot will expand as we work out the kinks, so please stay tuned.”
