Grocers Take Swipe Fee Battle to Capitol Hill

The grocery industry is in Washington to tell members of Congress that interchange reform cannot be delayed.

March 30, 2011

ARLINGTON, Va. - This week it??s the grocery industry??s turn to storm Capitol Hill with a message similar to our own: don??t delay swipe fee reform!

"Around here, 'delay?? is just a polite way to say 'derail??. It??s not surprising that the big banks are spending millions to protect their monopoly pricing power, but it is disheartening that they have found allies in Congress to help," said Representative Peter Welch (D-VT). "The Fed??s proposed rule is an even-handed approach that provides much-needed relief to small businesses and consumers. We??re going to redouble our efforts to protect these important reforms."

Welch is joining grocery industry representatives on March 31 at 9:00 am inside the U.S. Capitol (room HC-5) for a press conference on the difficulties of operating a grocery business when one of the fastest-growing businesses expenses ?" debit card swipe fees ?" continues to increase at an unpredictable rate.

Grocery store owners will share their stories of the challenging business environment in which they operate and they will urge their congressional representatives to stand up for Main Street businesses and their customers.

Don't allow the banks to thwart our efforts on debit card swipe fee reform. Write your members of Congress today and urge them NOT to delay this important industry initiative. Send a letter today!
