LOUISVILLE, KY - Starbucks announced last week an update to its popular mobile payment app (more than 26 million transactions to-date), adding a non-credit card payment source option and drive-through payment capability, Mobile Payments Today reports.

The revised app adds PayPal as a payment source to replenish funds, and the coffee retailer has modified its POS at drive-thru windows to more easily accommodate mobile payments.

Dana Kruse, Starbucks category manager for mobile, wrote on the company??s blog that the drive-thru modifications "took a few more considerations" than inside the store.

"(W)e needed something that would allow you to perform the scan yourself, rather than handing your phone over to us," Kruse continued, adding, "Plus, we needed a scanner that would still provide a smooth experience when the weather acts up and at night when it??s harder to see, and one that you could comfortably reach from various car heights."

Starbucks did not release a timeline for when the POS solution would be available.
