OAK BROOK, Ill. -
McDonald??s took on Starbucks with its McCafé product line, and now the burger
chain has its sights set on Subway, Advertising Age reports. McDonald??s will
soon roll out its McWrap sandwich nationally, coupled with a big national
marketing campaign.
The McWrap, available in
some locations currently, has been called McDonald??s "Subway buster." The
sandwich is the likely to be the first salvo in its attempt to grab more of the
sandwich pie.
Now that its McCafe line
has been successful, McDonald??s wants to shore up its sandwich category. The
chain sees rivals Chick-fil-A, KFC and Subway has having a strong presence in
sandwiches, and will use the McWrap launch as a way to garner more interest in
its own sandwiches.
The McWrap has grilled or
crisp chicken, cucumbers and romaine lettuce, plus three sauces from which to
choose. McDonald??s is banking on the customization and perceived healthfulness
of the McWrap as spurring sales. While the chain has snack wraps, the McWrap is
larger and had a very successful Chicago test last year.
