CHICAGO - Employees at CVS
Caremark will soon have to disclose whether they??re overweight ?" and what they
plan on doing about it, the Huffington Post reports. The drug store chain will
fine employees $600 each year if they don??t provide blood pressure, body fat,
height, weight and other health information to their insurance company. A
doctor must conduct the "wellness review," which will be covered by CVS.
The health-care reform law
is likely to make these types of requirements more commonplace, as it gives
businesses the right to levy penalties on employees who are not enrolled in the
company??s wellness plans. Some workers might have to pay more if they fail to
conform to certain health targets.
CVS pointed out that the
company itself wouldn??t have access to employee health information, but that
its benefits firm would. "Our benefits program is evolving to help our
colleagues engage more actively to improve their health and manage
health-associated costs," said Michael DeAngelis, CVS spokesman. "An initial
step to accomplish this goal is a health screening and wellness review so that
colleagues know their key health metrics in order to take action to improve
their overall health, if necessary."

companies are
expecting higher health care costs as the Affordable Health Care Act takes
effect next year.
