TAIWAN - After a study by China??s Consumers Foundation revealed that more than 60 percent of convenience store food contains "excessive levels of sodium," some convenience stores in Taiwan have committed to providing healthier meal options with less sodium and fewer calories, The China Post reports.

The Foundation gathered nearly three-dozen meal box samples from various stores, with nearly half exceeding safe sodium levels.

Convenience store meal boxes have become a major source of food for Taiwanese wage earners. Deep-fried meat, marinated products and brine-cured items are some of the more popular dishes that are heated onsite for a quick take-home meal.

Subsequent to the report, executives at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart Hi-Life and OK promised to develop lighter meals.
