SEATTLE - Starbucks will launch a branded, single-serve coffeemaker that can make coffee and espresso drinks in time for the holiday season, Advertising Age reports. Developed in conjunction with Krueger, Verismo will be available in some Starbucks locations and specialty retailers.

Analysts wonder if the new coffeemaker could sour the relationship between Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Starbucks. A year ago, the two companies signed a deal that Green Mountain would sell Starbucks and Tazo K-Cups, which Green Mountain has patented. Green Mountain also sells the Keurig machines for K-Cups.

In February, Green Mountain revealed its Vue single-serve coffee brewer. Verismo will not be able to brew K-Cups.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said the relationship between Starbucks and Green Mountain is still strong, that the two companies "can and will coexist," because Verismo can make espresso drinks and Vue cannot.

Schultz also pointed out that at-home coffee machines would not take away from Starbucks?? retail locations. Current plans have only Starbucks coffee being compatible with the Verismo, but that the company reserves "the right to open the system to others, and we have not made that decision as of today," he said.

The coffeehouse chain has made advances in single-serve coffee since its start with Via instant coffee in 2009. In 2011, Starbucks inked an agreement with Courtesy Products to place Starbucks single-serve coffee in upscale hotels.

Meanwhile, Starbucks has plans to revamp and open new stores in the United Kingdom, while its new lighter blends are debuting nationally in the United States.
