Unilever issues voluntary recall of Skippy's Reduced Fat Creamy and Reduced Fat Super Chunk peanut butters after the possible discovery of salmonella.

March 08, 2011

ATLANTA - Unilever issued a voluntary recall last week of Skippy's Reduced Fat Creamy and Reduced Fat Super Chunk brands last week sold in 16 states after the possible discovery of salmonella, CNN.com reports.

The recall applies to products distributed in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The recall was issued out of concern that some of the peanut butter shipped to stores had salmonella, though there have been no known illnesses.

Unilever acted after inspectors found that "finished products may contain the bacteria" without indication of where the contamination was found, its severity, or the steps being taken to address it beyond the recall.

The recalled products are sold in 16.3-ounce plastic jars, have UPC codes of 048001006812 or 048001006782 and have best-if-used-by-dates of May 16 to 21, 2012. They should be thrown away, and replacement coupons are available by calling Skippy at (800) 453-3432.

The recall was issued in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration.
