WASHINGTON, D.C. - Customers wind their way past the cash register and shelves stocked with typical convenience store products to reach Fast Gourmet, a sandwich shop tucked behind the store, the Washington Post reports. Visitors who find themselves inside the tiny restaurant discover a wide variety of tasty and unique sandwiches.

Last October, the Olivera brothers, Juan and Manuel, opened the shop. Their menu divides its sandwiches into three parts: Urban Taste, which lists Cuban, chicken salad, steak and meatball sandwiches; Wraps, which has chicken Caesar, lamb and shrimp; and Flair, which boasts Latin American flavors, such as chivito from the brother??s native Uruguay and Milanesa.

Rounding out the menu are empanadas, coleslaw and fried plantains and yucca. The Post reviewer reported that all the food was delicious with the exception of the salads. Juan Olivera cooks the food while his brother runs the front of house.

A few tables cater to dine-in customers, who order at a counter. Soda comes in Mason jars, adding to the down-home atmosphere.

The shop has a growing delivery service and even serves sandwiches until 5:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
