BOSTON - This fall, Walgreens will open a third emporium featuring a cross-section of merchandise in a former Boston Borders store, the Boston Globe reports. The chain has two emporiums ?" in Chicago and New York City ?" that go beyond typical drugstore fare.

Walgreens emporiums offer chefs behind sushi stations, juice bars with made-to-order smoothies, fresh organic fruits and vegetables, food stations with fresh-made sandwiches and salads, and beauty salons with nail, eyebrow and hair services. Traditional merchandise, such as over-the-counter medications and prescription medicines, plus household products, also have shelf space.

"This is an opportunity to do something unique and different in such a high-profile location," said Michael Polzin, spokesman for Walgreen Co. "There are a lot of people walking by on the Freedom Trail, and it will be a great destination for people who live and work in the area and for out-of-town visitors."

The New York location, which opened under the Duane Reade brand, has been a success, said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst with NPD Group. "Think of it as a drugstore on steroids," said Cohen. "It is more of a mini merchant, with everything from drugs to duds, from baby products to beach chairs."

The Boston emporium will look similar to two other locations, with a European boutique feel to it. Walgreens said it would keep the building??s unique architecture, such as decorative plaster ceilings and travertine walls.
