LAKE FOREST, Calif. – With Lent officially underway, many will go meat-free on Fridays, while others will forgo eating meat for the entire six-plus week period that began this year on Feb. 10 (Ash Wednesday) and ends on March 27 (Easter Sunday). For those observing Lent, many quick service restaurants, such as Del Taco and Wienerschnitzel, are offering non-meat options that include seafood.

Del Taco launched beer-battered shrimp, available for a limited time during Lent. “With our delicious beer battered shrimp and fish offerings, guests don’t have to give up Del Taco during Lent. In fact, the return of our crispy shrimp is a much-anticipated event that our fans look forward to every year,” said John Cappasola, executive vice president and chief brand officer.

At Wienerschnitzel locations, the chain is offering fish and chips during Lent, two crispy fish filets served with tartar sauce and French fries.

Church’s Chicken is offering two items for Lent: lemon-seasoned butterfly shrimp and crispy fish. “Guests love and anticipate our longstanding tradition of serving seafood during the Lenten season,” says Jennifer Chasteen, senior director of brand & product strategy for Church’s Chicken.

Fast-casual chain Long John Silver’s is serving up an Alaskan cod meal, and reportedly sees a 75% increase in sales on Ash Wednesday and will sell more than 20 million pieces of fish before Easter at its more than 1,100 restaurants, reports Nation’s Restaurant News.
