Menu Labeling Bill Vote Next Week

NACS strongly supports the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act, which addresses crucial issues related to convenience store foodservice.

February 05, 2016

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy formally announced that menu labeling legislation will be voted on in the House of Representatives next week. The bill, H.R. 2017—the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act—introduced by Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), is supported by NACS and is one of our top priority legislative issues.

The legislation would change the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) menu-labeling rule, set to go into effect sometime next year, that governs how convenience stores, restaurants, grocery stores and other retail stores that sell ready-to-eat food must disclose the caloric content of those offerings. As written, the FDA’s rule is overly burdensome on the convenience industry. H.R. 2017 would solve that problem and produce a rule that makes sense for our industry and others.

The bill is expected to be on the floor on Thursday, February 11, with the final vote possibly not happening until Friday morning. In the meantime, NACS needs your help to encourage your members of Congress to vote yes on this very important bill.

Visit the NACS Grassroots page to identify your representative and to find a pre-written, editable letter that you can immediately email to their office. The more members of Congress who hear from their constituents on this issue, the more likely they are to support our position.
