McDonald’s Will Expand Table Service in United Kingdom

Tesco will also abandon its foray into quick lunchtime service.

LONDON – McDonald’s will introduce table service and made-to-order gourmet burgers at 400 restaurants in the United Kingdom this year, The Guardian reports. The fast-food chain tested the service at a limited number of locations last year.

McDonald’s also said it would increase the number of locations offering its signature collection of premium burgers from 30 to 60 in a move to make the chain appear more modern, as well as bring in more families. The United Kingdom has been an area of consistent sales growth for the fast-food chain. The chain’s all-day breakfast menu at U.S. stores bumped sales in the fourth quarter.

“Investing in our customer experience is paramount,” said Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald’s UK. “It’s important that we continue to listen to the 3.7 million people who visit us every day and respond with even more reasons for them to come to our restaurants. In 2016 we will continue to focus on providing great value and variety, as well as invest in our restaurants, our people and our menu, to ensure customers enjoy a great experience every time they visit us.”

Meanwhile, Tesco has decided to close its two Food to Go stores on March 4. The stores catered to the lunchtime crowd with sandwiches. The move comes around a little more than a year after the grocer opened its first Food to Go location. The small, 1,000-square-foot stores offered 100 sandwich selections, in addition to soups and other prepared meals.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to improve our convenience offering in London, which is why we trialed two Food to Go concept stores,” said a Tesco spokesman. “As part of the trial, our customers told us they prefer the wider range of products offered in our Express and Metro stores.”
