ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Convenience stores comprise an estimated 45% of all SNAP-eligible locations and will be impacted by the new final rules relating to retailer eligibility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The new provisions will affect how convenience stores and corner stores are able to continue to participate and redeem almost 6% of the roughly $70 billion program.

The latest NACS Convenience Matters podcast examines what you need to know about the rules and what you need to do about them.

In “What SNAP Rules Mean for Retailers,” cohosts Jeff Lenard, NACS vice president of strategic industry initiatives, and John Eichberger, executive director of the Fuels Institute, talk to Eva Rigamonti, associate with Steptoe & Johnson LLP (NACS counsel) about how the final rules affect convenience retailers—as well as some potential opportunities for retailers to consider.

“This was a great conservation about the specifics of the program and the timelines retailers face to be a part of the program,” Lenard said.

A new “Convenience Matters” podcast will be released every week, focusing on topics related to convenience stores. Since its launch in February 2016, it has been downloaded in more than 50 countries.
