NEW YORK – Pizza Hut has begun selling single slices of pizza, “the new frontier in the pizza chain wars,” according to CNN Money.

Pizza Hut began selling singles at its York, Nebraska, and Pawtucket, Rhode Island stores, a pilot that will eventually expand nationwide, said spokesperson Doug Terfehr.

Terfehr called the move a step toward "the next generation of what the restaurant can be like when it comes to ordering pizza."

Ordering a single slice of pizza is common at small pizza shops at convenience stores, but it’s “uncharted territory for the chains,” CNN said. Domino’s already sells pizza by the slice at 50 of its roughly 5,000 U.S. locations.

Previously, pizza chains competed by introducing new crusts, developing side dishes, and improving the online and mobile ordering experience. However, facing stiff competition from independent shops, QSRs, supermarkets, and even Chipotle, which is testing a pizza concept, pizza chains see single slices as a way to grab a larger share of the consumer pie.

Terfehr said single slices offer customers an important option and won’t disrupt the current business model, which focuses on fast delivery of pizza. He said the Nebraska and Rhode Island restaurants were picked because of their "diverse locations" and different customer tastes.
