Breakfast Pizzas Appear on More A.M. Menus

Pizza is making a move to the morning daypart with toppings such as eggs, sausage, cheese and bacon.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Forget eating last night€™s cold pizza for breakfast. These days, you can find pizzas made especially for the morning meal, such as Sbarro€™s pizza topped with bacon, eggs, sausage and mozzarella, Nation€™s Restaurant News reports.

Pizza now graces the a.m. menu at 5% of chain and independent restaurants, according to Dataessential, that€™s up 18% since 2008. Most breakfast pizzas are served at independent establishments or small chains. One Domino€™s in Dayton, Ohio, offers breakfast pizzas, but that€™s because it€™s hope 23 hours and is near a university.

Hot Italian lists three breakfast pizzas, including the Razzoli with caramelized onions, scrambled eggs, fennel sausage, fontina cheese and mozzarella. Greenleaf has pizzas with sunny-side up eggs, roasted potatoes, spicy turkey sausage and goat cheese.

Lazy Dog Café serves sunny-side up eggs on its Sunny Side Up Pizza that also features bacon, cheese and spinach. Veladora offers sunny-side up eggs on a breakfast flatbread with prosciutto di San Daniele.

Americans love breakfast. Breakfast food sales spiked during the recession, experiencing a 20% increase in revenue from 2007 to 2011. The market is forecast to grow nearly 26% from 2012 to 2017 to reach $15.7 billion annually, according to Mintel.
